Christmas Ornaments for the Foodie

Every year, I buy my daughter a Christmas ornament, so that she will have a decent collection of Christmas tree decorations by the time she finishes college. At a recent trip to my local Sur La Table store, I saw all these fabulous food glass ornaments. They would make a perfect hostess gift or stocking stuffer! I am sharing just some of the lovely little glass pieces of art, which are on sale right now for 30% off!

Since Laura is such a lover of sushi, I thought this sushi roll decoration is perfect for her! The burger basket is a great choice for her boyfriend, because he is a lover of In-N-Out Burger!

Portland Farmers’ Market

Portland Farmers Market

Farmers’ Market at Portland State University

The city of Portland has two things I love, family and a fabulous farmers’ market! You can go shopping to the outdoor market seven days a week in different parts of the city. On Saturday, it is held on the green belt area of Portland State University campus. Since it is the beginning of spring, the selection is smaller than what you would find in the summer. Right now there is an abundance of fragrant tulips and daffodils of all colors and varieties and beautiful bouquets starting at $10.00!

Fiddlehead Ferns

I saw fiddlehead ferns for the first time at the market. It is a gourmet wild vegetable found across North America in the springtime. Many people think that they taste like a cross between asparagus and young spinach.

Different Varieties of Healthy Kale

There were many vendors selling kale. This particular farmer had 5 varieties of it—Green Russian, Red Russian, Purple, Italian and Green.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb brings back memories of my childhood. My mom used to grow this fruit and would later stew it. Then she would serve it to us cold, like a pie filling without the crust!

Recycling Station

Portland is an environmentally conscious city, I was impressed to see, but not surprised, that recycling was available on site for food purchasers.

Gorgeous Bouquet

I only wish that I could have bought some of the fabulous produce that I saw yesterday, but I was able to buy this gorgeous bouquet for my hostess for only $10.00. Since I live in the desert, visiting a farmers’ market like the one in Portland is a real treat for me!

Saint Cupcake in Portland, Oregon

Saint Cupcake

Saint Cupcake SW, Portland, Oregon

Since I am currently visiting family in Portland, Oregon, I am not going to do my usual blog about a simple and healthy recipe. Today’s blog for Fiesta Friday, (which is a day late), is about something delicious and not very healthy! It is about a wonderful bakery in Portland called Saint Cupcake. It was coincidently featured on the Cooking Channel this past Thursday.

When I arrived at the Morrison store, I was disappointed to learn that they had discontinued two of the three items mentioned on the show. To make matters worse the third item, the BonBonBunBuns, were not ready, because I had arrived at the shop too early and the dough was still rising! My disappointment was short-lived, however, after I took a really good look at what was behind the glass displays!

Toasted Coconut Cupcake

Toasted Coconut Cream

The cupcake that intrigued me the most was the Toasted Coconut Cream. It is made with a buttery vanilla cake, toffee chips and classic vanilla cream cheese frosting and topped off with toasted coconut flakes! It was sweet and so delicious! The calories were well worth it! So if you are ever in Portland, Oregon, please visit Saint Cupcake. You will be glad you did!

Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market

On a recent trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to help my daughter move into her sorority house, I decided to visit their farmers’ market. It was my fifth visit to the town and the first time I saw beautiful blue skies! The farmers’ market was exactly what I expected. It had a wonderful selection of locally grown organic produce and lovely colorful flowers! Unfortunately, I couldn’t buy anything, because I was just visiting.

Farmers’ Markets

IMG_2346

Farmers’ markets are found worldwide. Farmers sell their produce directly to the consumer, so the fruits and vegetables are generally fresher and less expensive than in grocery stores, especially in the agricultural areas of the country. The selection of produce and organic produce can also vary greatly. The picture above was taken at a wonderful farmer’s market in Portland, Oregon.

Costco

It should be no surprise that Costco has the best prices for organic chicken, ground beef, eggs and greens! The warehouse membership stores are located across the United States with warehouses in Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and Spain.
